This story is loosely based on the ideology of catholicism and purgatory where these snake-like creatures are the visual representation of each characters morality. My first piece is a landscape to help establish the harsh setting of a world made up of vast, icy lands. Utilizing contrast (in piece 1) I bring the viewer’s eye to the church, where a bonfire skews a rather peaceful setting. In pieces 2 and 6, I introduce the main antagonist (Ede) by contrasting her against a dark background as well as the serpentine creatures placed below her. This emphasizes the focal point and her depraved dominance over these creatures. I experiment with rhythm (in pieces 5, 9, and 10) to show the unity between the two protagonists (named Callum and Flavian) and these creatures, as well as the bond they share. The clash of such opposing sides is epitomized in piece 7, where I construct a piece inspired by the movement and use of tenebrism from the Baroque period.
